Did you accidentally create too much sticky rice and now have to deal with the leftovers? Dealing with leftovers, especially incredibly sticky rice is a common problem. You don’t know what to do with them the next day, or you’ve run out of creative ideas on what to do with them.

Food waste is the most heinous of all wastes. I understand. I know it’s best eaten while it’s still perfectly sticky and al dente in texture. It might be time-consuming to reheat sticky rice, especially if it does not taste the same as it did the first time you prepared it. Consider how much of a waste it is if you throw it away without reusing it.

  • Place the rice in the rice cooker and set the temperature to warm. This method is one of my favorites since it properly preserves the rice’s stickiness.
  • Wait for it to reheat up again for around 10-15 minutes, depending on how much residue you have left. If you have too much leftover, add more time to warm it up correctly.
  • You may also use leftover sticky rice on top of freshly prepared sticky rice as a trick. Add the leftover rice to steam and cook with the new ones while the fresh batch of sticky rice is nearing completion. Just make sure you don’t mix the old with the fresh to avoid spoilage.
  • Before consuming the freshly cooked rice, serve the leftovers.

No. 2 Make use of the microwave

  • If you don’t have time to cook and need to consume your sticky rice right away, a microwave oven can helpful!
  • Place a cup of leftover sticky rice in a microwave-safe bowl or container.
  • Then stir in a tablespoon of warm water. One tablespoon of warm water equals one cup of rice. If you need to reheat more sticky rice, add another tablespoon of warm water to each cup of sticky rice.
  • Microwave it for 2-3 minutes on low heat. Check it periodically to ensure that the rice does not dry out and remains sticky and mealy.

  • Warm sticky rice in a pan on top of the stove is another quick way to reheat it. If you don’t have a rice cooker or a microwave oven at home, this will come in handy.
  • Get a medium-sized pan large enough to hold the sticky rice that has been left over.
  • Then melt the butter or lard in the pan and add the sticky rice.
  • Over medium heat, stir in the sticky rice with the butter.
  • Instead of normal water, you can use chicken broth or veggie broth to boost the flavor. One tablespoon of broth is required for every cup of rice. Into the rice mixture, pour a few teaspoons of broth. You can utilize the same 1:1 ratio.
  • Mix everything thoroughly, then cover the pan with a lid and steam for about 3 minutes.
  • To keep the rice from burning, keep an eye on it and reduce the heat to keep it steaming.
  • Please remove it from the stove and turn off the heat. Allow it to steam for another 2 minutes on its own. Then serve!

  • Last but not least, preparing fried rice is my favorite way of reheating or repurposing sticky rice. This is the most acceptable method to flavor your rice.
  • Melt some butter or lard in a skillet or a large wok over medium heat.
  • Heat two tablespoons of minced garlic and one diced onion in a skillet for about 2 minutes, until the onions are transparent, and mix well.
  • Then combine the leftover rice with the remaining garlic and onions.
  • You may add some thinly sliced vegetables like carrots, chives, and mushrooms to your fried rice to make it more interesting.
  • You can also include meats such as diced chicken breast, chorizo, spam, or hotdog.
  • Season with soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. In a large mixing bowl, blend all flavors until they are evenly distributed.
  • Make a hole in the pan’s center and push the rice to the sides. Scramble several eggs and break 2-3 eggs in the center. Combine the scrambled eggs, rice, and remaining ingredients once they’ve been cooked.
  • Serve immediately with chopped chives on top.

Additional suggestions:

  • Don’t keep it in the fridge for more than two days if you have leftover rice. It’s not safe to eat if it’s too dry since bacteria can grow within. It’s best to reheat it and eat it the next day.
  • You can’t put leftover sticky rice back in the fridge once it’s been reheated. You should only reheat leftover food once for safety reasons before being ingested.
  • It would help if you never reheated sticky rice without water since it will lose its stickiness and become overly burnt or crispy.
  • You can also make rice cakes with leftover sticky rice. Grind it in a food processor and roll it into balls for a delightful snack. Consume right away.
