How to freeze nuts

Freezing nuts is exceptionally easy, and with a few simple steps you can freeze your nuts to keep them fresh for later use and prevent spoilage before use.

For nuts left over from an open container, it is best to place them in a freezer container. You may choose to use a resealable plastic freezer container, or a resealable freezer bag.

Both options work well to keep air and moisture out, further preserving the nuts stored inside. Remember to label the storage container with the freeze date before placing it in the freezer, so you have an indication of when to eat the nuts.

It is better not to freeze ground nuts. If you plan to use ground walnuts, it’s best to freeze them whole and then grind them right out of the freezer.

You should avoid processing, chopping, or grinding the nuts until you are ready to add them to your food. This helps ensure that the nuts taste optimal once thawed.

Nuts are reputed to pick up and absorb odors from foods stored near them. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that the container you’ve chosen to store your nuts protects them from absorbing other flavors in the freezer.

If you want to freeze a package of nuts, but only want to use a few at a time, it’s a good idea to freeze them in a way that makes it easy to separate them later.

To do this, you must place the walnuts spread out on a baking tray. Put it in the freezer until it is completely frozen. Next, transfer these frozen nuts to an airtight container or storage bag.

This way, the nuts won’t freeze together, and it will be easy to grab a handful from the container, instead of thawing the whole batch.

Nuts easily go rancid when exposed to warm temperatures. This is due to their high oil content, which allows them to spoil quickly if left at room temperature for a while.

Keeping them refrigerated in the fridge or freezer greatly extends their useful life.

Rancidity occurs when there is prolonged exposure to warm temperatures, temperature changes, oxygen, or moisture.

That is why it is so important to store nuts carefully, preventing them from being exposed to these factors and, in turn, from turning rancid.

An unopened bag of shelled or shelled walnuts stored in the pantry will keep fresh for up to 3 weeks. If kept in the fridge, nuts can stay fresh for up to 6 months. However, stored in the freezer, the nuts will stay fresh for up to 1 year.

The nut will be edible after this, but will lose its high quality after this period of time.

When storing nuts, it’s best to leave the bag unopened until you’re ready to use them.

If you are going to buy walnuts, try to buy them without shell. Although it can be laborious to have to shell them, at least you can be sure that the nuts will stay fresh for longer.

Shelled nuts go rancid much faster, and need to be refrigerated or frozen to extend their shelf life.

You can tell if the nuts have gone bad with a few simple observations. For shelled walnuts, you can look for signs that the shell has shrunk and dried out and looks unhealthy. If this happens, you should throw away the nut.

If you’re not sure, you can crack the shell and look inside. If a web forms on the nut, or if there are signs of mold, you should throw it away.
