Gruyere Cheese: Keto Friendly Or Not?
Yes. Gruyère cheese is a keto-friendly option. It’s a firm yellow Swiss cheese that contains nearly no carbohydrates. This corresponds to the fact that the more complex the cheese, the lower the net carbohydrates.
Stay tuned because there’s a lot more to learn about this cheese while on a keto diet.
Take a glance at what I’ll be covering in this article:
- Carbs
- Other cheeses that are keto-friendly
- Ketosis- What cheeses are going to knock you out, and which ones aren’t?
- Foods that complement Gruyère (and are keto-friendly)
- Gruyère cheese recipes
Let’s get started with this corny article.
Is Gruyère a carbohydrate-rich cheese?
The primary item to keep an eye on when on a keto diet is your carbohydrates.
A ketogenic diet pushes your body to burn fat rather than carbohydrates. As a result, it’s critical to keep track of your carb consumption. Most cheeses don’t have a lot of carbohydrates, which may surprise you.
Remember that the firmer the cheese, the fewer carbohydrates it contains. Cottage cheese, for example, has a lot more carbohydrates than cheddar cheese.
So, how many carbohydrates does Gruyère contain?
Gruyère cheese has 0.1 total net carbohydrates, according to the technical answer. As a result, you may claim it contains no carbohydrates. Furthermore, Gruyere melts fast, transforming it into a keto-friendly cheese sauce. Gruyère is also one of the few cheese slices with no carbohydrates.
Manchego and burrata cheese come in second and third, respectively, with 0 grams of carbohydrates.
Some well-known cheeses have a higher carb content, such as:
- Cheddar cheese has only 6 grams of carbohydrates.
- Parmesan cheese has only 9 grams of carbohydrates.
- Mozzarella has a carb count of 68 grams.
- 1 gram of carbohydrates in Swiss
- 1.5 grams of carbohydrates in cream cheese
Keto is no longer only about avoiding carbohydrates. It also has a lot to do with the fat percentage. You want to eat a lot of fat and minimal carbohydrates. So let’s see which cheese matches both of these criteria and is the most excellent fit for our keto diet.
What type of cheese is best for a ketogenic diet?
We discussed the carbohydrate composition of cheese, but what about the fat content?
The amount of fat in your diet is equally as crucial as the number of carbohydrates. We’ll look at a few well-known types of cheese that you may not be familiar with and compare them to the others. We’ll examine each cheese’s carbohydrates, fat, and protein content.
Based on one ounce of cheese, here’s the list:
- Gruyère Cheese has 0 grams of carbohydrates, 9 grams of fat, and 8.5 grams of protein per serving.
- Burrata Cheese has 0 grams of carbohydrates, 6.3 grams of fat, and 6.3 grams of protein per serving.
- Provolone cheese has 0.3 grams of carbohydrates, 8 grams of fat, and 7 grams of protein.
- Cheddar cheese has 0.6 grams of carbohydrates, 9 grams of fat, and 7 grams of protein.
- Parmesan cheese has 0.9 grams of carbohydrates, 8 grams of fat, and 11 grams of protein.
- Goat cheese has 0.12 g carbohydrates, 6 g fat, and 5.3 g protein.
- Mozzarella has 0.68 g carbohydrates, 6.3 g fat, and 6.3 g protein.
- Swiss: 1 gram carbohydrate, 8.8 grams fat, 7.6 gram protein
- Feta has 1 gram of carbohydrates, 6 grams of fat, and 4 grams of protein.
- 1.5 grams of carbohydrates, 9.8 grams of fat, and 1.7 grams of protein in cream cheese
- Ricotta has 3 grams of carbohydrates, 2.2 grams of fat, and 3.2 grams of protein per serving.
There are two options for the most keto-friendly option.
Both cream cheese and Gruyère cheese have high-fat content and low carbohydrate content. However, we’ll forego the cream cheese’s extra 0.8 grams of fat in exchange for the Gruyère’s 0 grams of carbohydrates.
This indicates that Gruyère cheese is the winner! Gruyère is a keto-friendly cheese that goes well with a variety of foods.
Will overeating Gruyère cause me to lose my ketosis?
The quick answer is that it’s unlikely. To surpass the daily carb restrictions of the keto diet, you’d have to consume a lot of Gruyère.
First and foremost, let’s define ketosis.
Ketosis is a metabolic situation in which the body feels compelled to burn fat rather than carbohydrates for energy. Ketosis can occur as soon as three days after you begin your keto diet. On the other hand, your body will take a bit longer to adjust to efficiently burning fat.
Increased energy and a reduced appetite are two symptoms that your body is in ketosis. The numerous advantages of following a ketogenic diet are why you don’t want to be forced out of ketosis.
It’s not just because of the carbohydrates; it’s also because of the sugar. You shouldn’t eat too much sugar when you’re on a keto diet. Similarly, the incorrect yogurt might knock you out of ketosis.
How much of anything may throw you out of ketosis?
Any food, when combined with this information, has the ability to bring you out of ketosis. To stay in ketosis, you must practice moderation. Gruyère cheese has 0.1 grams of sugar and has a very minimal chance of driving you out of ketosis due to its overall low carbohydrate and sugar content.
Ricotta cheese, for example, is heavy in carbohydrates and sugar. Cottage cheese, for example, includes 8 grams of carbohydrates and.8 grams of sugar.
Remember that soft cheeses have more carbohydrates, so stick to harder cheeses if you’re on a keto diet. If you’re eating higher-carb cheese, try to restrict yourself to 1 to 2 pieces every meal. From melted to marketed cheese, Gruyère cheese is safe to consume more of in practically every condition.
It has a solid overall score in every category.
Moderation is crucial for keto, as is keeping an eye on your carb and sugar consumption.
But first, let’s go through the net carb and fat restrictions for the four primary forms of keto diets:
Keto Diet Type Daily Carb Allowance Daily Fat Allowance
- Dietary Guidelines for Ketosis (SKD)
- 150 grams 20-50 grams
- Keto Diet with Specific Goals (TKD)
- 150 grams 25-50 grams
- The Keto Diet Has Its Ups and Downs (CKD)
- During the no-carb time, consume 20-50 grams.
- 150 milligrams
- HPKD (High-Protein Ketogenic Diet) 20-50 grams 150 grams
It’s worth noting that, despite what I just said about fat, there isn’t a “fat restriction” in keto. It also depends on how many calories you consume every day. A 2,000-calorie-per-day diet was used to calculate the 150 grams.
It’s also important to understand that it’s not just any fat.
Trans fats should be avoided at all costs. Fats should be obtained from the following sources:
- Seeds & Nuts
- Avocados
- Extra virgin olive oil and olives
- Eggs
- Butter and full-fat dairy products that haven’t been sweetened
- Cheese\sMeats
On a keto diet, what can I eat with Gruyère?
Now that you know how much gruyere cheese may benefit a cheese lover on keto let’s speak about meals!
As previously said, Gruyère cheese melts well in a sauce. That is, you may use it as a dip for your meal or as a topping for your main dish. When it comes to creating queso for Mexican cuisine, Gruyère cheese is ideal.
Gruyère cheese can also be shredded and sprinkled on top of dishes. If you enjoy Gruyère, you can cut a piece and consume it immediately. Eggs and Gruyère cheese go together like a dream (check out the recipe in the video at the end). Your taste senses will reward you whether you use it as a sauce or shredded.
It can be served with scrambled eggs in an omelet, egg bake, or frittatas.
This sort of cheese may also surprise you by being tasty enough to use mac and cheese. Choose keto-friendly spaghetti and add the cheese on top. It doesn’t get much better than that for cheese lovers.
Later in this post, I have a terrific mac and cheese recipe, so don’t miss out on adding it to your recipe book.
Keep in mind that this cheese goes well with both meats and vegetables.
This cheese goes with practically anything you can think of that you can put cheese on. It’s a win-win situation for cheese lovers on keto because it’s both delicious and the finest cheese you can consume while on a diet.
Gruyère cheese is used in some of the best keto recipes.
Gruyère cheese works well with almost every dish, but I’ll show you a handful that will bring out your inner cheese connoisseur.

Optional:
Seasoning with salt and pepper

What if you don’t have any sherry vinegar?
It’s great for folks on a keto diet since it has a taste that’s quite similar to balsamic vinegar. However, balsamic vinegar is only suitable for one of the four varieties of the keto diet.
Have I answered all of your questions regarding eating gruyere cheese on a keto diet?
As a cheese enthusiast, I find the concept of having to give up cheese for a diet to be a terrible one. A keto diet does not necessitate the elimination of all cheese. Remember to keep track of your carbohydrates and sugar intake.
We discovered that cottage cheese should be avoided and that cheese should be consumed in moderation.
Furthermore, we discovered that Gruyere cheese is keto-friendly and goes well with a wide variety of foods.
Most cheeses are low in carbohydrates, especially hard cheeses. The finest cheese to eat while on a keto diet is Gruyere. It has a low carbohydrate content of 0 grams and a high-fat content of 9 grams. Furthermore, the sugar has a low gram count of 0 grams.
Cheese lovers, stay cheesy!
